AboutNothing

This adaptation of Nothing was first staged at the Glasgow Citizen’s Theatre in 2003, directed by Robert David MacDonald. The production has been re-staged by Philip Prowse specifically for the Brits off Broadway festival.

Henry Green’s extraordinary story of the indulgent preoccupations of two privileged families is set in 1950’s London. Funny and bleak in equal measure, Nothing was first performed at the Glasgow Citizen’s Theatre where it won rave reviews for its portrayal of the selfish manipulations of a wealthy post-war generation oblivious to the privations of two world wars and the needs of their own children.

Nothing was nominated for the Critics Circle award for best adaptation by Andrea Hart (winner of the Sundance Award for Best Newcomer in ‘Miss Monday’) and Best Actress for Sophie Ward, (known to US audiences for her work on films such as "Young Sherlock Holmes”, "A Summer Story” and "Wuthering Heights”). With Simon Dutton (Dangerous Beauty) as the louche John Pomfret, the production is re-staged by internationally renowned director Philip Prowse, artistic director at the Citizens for 30 years, who has also worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre and the English National Opera. "Darker than Larkin, funnier than Coward”, Nothing is a guilty pleasure, a delicious evening of malicious comedy at the expense of Henry Green’s monstrous creations.

The Plot

John Pomfret (Simon Dutton) and Jane Wetherby (Sophie Ward) once broke the tedium of their bourgeois decadence by having a rather spiffing affair. Problem is, now Jane’s son, Philip (Pete Ashmore), is subject to rumours that he is their love child, and not his father’s son. Which is jolly complicated, as Philip simply adores John’s daughter, Mary (Candida Benson). As if this wasn’t difficult enough, John’s current mistress, Liz Jennings (Andrea Hart), is being pursued by Jane’s darling friend Dickie Abbot (Derwent Watson) and simply everyone is gossiping about Philip and Jane.
